Livingston, Robert R. (1746–1813), and Richard Henry Lee (1732–1794) as Delegates to the Second Continental Congress, Manuscript document unsigned, Draft of “The Twelve Colonies by their Delegates in Congress to the Inhabitants of Great Britain” – July 1775 Philadelphia, PA July 1775. Opening words “FRIENDS, COUNTRYMEN & BRETHEREN,” Draft written by Livingston with edits by Lee of Virginia (1732–1794). 12 pages on 6 leaves folio (with writing on both sides of the paper), 31 x 24 ½ cm, on laid paper, watermarks “Georgius Rex,” a crowned shield surrounded by foliage and enclosed with a circle and “W”, with countermark “Pro Patria” comprising a figure of Britannia seated in profile on the right holding a pole-arm in her left hand and a garland across her lap in her right hand, enclosed in a wooden palisade with a crowned lion rampant facing left, brandishing a sword and holding arrows. Originally folded, with significant, but reparable separations, especially at fold intersections. The paper is lightly toned. The writing is very fine, with strong ink.
